ItвЂ™s rare that I want a movie to be bleaker, darker, more wrenching, and yet thatвЂ™s just what a better Pet Sematary adaptation would look like. What a mood could be conjured up if a Pet Sematary movie unfolded at a more exacting pace. KГ¶lsch and WidmyerвЂ™s film made me yearn for a really heavy, almost poetic adaptation of KingвЂ™s novel, one that is deliberate and slow as it tracks LouisвЂ™s, and his familyвЂ™s, disastrous wrestling with mortality. The film also moves awfully fast, giving us little time to wallow in the horrible inexorability of the story. An idyll quickly becomes a place of tension and unease-thereвЂ™s a sense of looming danger to match the creepy pet cemetery the locals have consecrated behind the CreedsвЂ™ house. But their placid new surroundings are soon, and frequently, interrupted by roaring tractor trailers zooming down the road in front of the house. The family is seeking some peace and quiet Mary is still haunted by the long-ago death of her sister, and Louis needs a less harrowing job after years of working the graveyard shift at a Boston emergency room. The basic structure of KingвЂ™s gripping descent into regret are there: a doctor, Louis Creed ( Jason Clarke), moves with his wife, Rachel ( Amy Seimetz), to a small town in Maine, their two young children, Ellie ( JetГ© Laurence) and Gage ( Hugo and Lucas Lavoie), in tow, along with the family cat, Church. Not so for Kevin KГ¶lsch and Dennis WidmyerвЂ™s film, which is slick in all the wrong places and makes one drastic change to the narrative that tips the movie into goofy schlock. LambertвЂ™s film at least has a shabby grime to it, a drab ugliness that feels like the right kind of setting for KingвЂ™s miserable story. Pet Sematary is dark stuff that deserves a serious film treatment, one it didnвЂ™t get in Mary LambertвЂ™s campy 1989 adaptation-and certainly doesnвЂ™t get in this new movie, arriving 30 years later. ItвЂ™s sad horror, far more resonant than silly jump scares because of how deeply it penetrates-unsettling to the bone, stoking an almost hopeless despair. ItвЂ™s classic King, a Maine-set tale of creeping awfulness that speaks to something wrong in all of us, our failure to accept the random tragedy of the world, and the limits of our hearts and minds to combat it. Watching the new film adaptation of Stephen KingвЂ™s Pet Sematary (out April 5), it struck me that this is one of the bleakest premises imaginable-grief and displacement and environmental menace, all swirling together into a terrible soup of dread.
